Tinnitus--It May Not Just be in the Ears

One of the most often searched for topics on my blog is the one about Tinnitus--The Roaring in my Head. Since so many searches are leading to that topic on this blog, I am guessing that quite a few people are affected by tinnitus.

In Healthy Hearing, a recent article, "Brain Imaging May Hold Clues to Ringing in the Ears," focused on tinnitus. The article stated that scientists are exploring the causes of tinnitus in the brain. Research currently shows that people with tinnitus seem to have a lower amount of gamma aminobutric acid (GABA) than people without tinnitus.

Imagine popping a GABA pill before heading to bed to make the roaring go away!

This is very interesting. It's rare if my ears aren't ringing.

That's interesting as I've heard about other oily type pills (a type of B vitamin actually) that is also supposed to help. Much of tinnitus is allegedly from your nerve endings repairing themselves. So it's a good idea to have things in your system that are helping your nerve endings repair themselves and keep themselves coated. I'll definitely check out GABA though. Thanks!

From a quick search of Gamma-aminobutyric acid. I'm no scientist, but the pages I arrived at ... one way of increasing the amount of acid in your body is to take Diazepam, which traditionally is used to treat anxiety.

One therefore has to ask is there a link between anxiety and tinnitus?

Thanks for posting this. We've just been talking about tinnitus on my late-deafened list serve. I'm going to send this link to them! I have tinnitus all the time in my right there. It sounds electrical, like the tones they use to test your hearing, but very faint, not loud. I also get bubbling at night when trying to sleep. (sigh).

Wonder how that would work for those with work related (or music related) hearing loss...

Ditto, thanks for posting this as well as for the link to the previous article. I thought some idiot put the Atlantic Ocean, a firetruck, that lady with the funny horned hat in the opera, and an air raid siren in my head. It's nice to see there's some hope after all!

I have Arnold-Chiari type I (ACM)and have ringing of the ears quite frequently-at least once a day. A lot of the people on the ACM message boards are different ages with no hearing issues but have tinnitus also.
